QR Codes on Packaging and Business Cards: A Practical Guide

24 Aug 2026 1 min read

Print is unforgiving: get a QR code wrong on packaging or a business card and it simply won't scan. A few rules keep that from happening.

Mind the minimum size

Aim for at least 2 cm square on a business card, more on a box people hold at arm's length. Too small and phone cameras can't lock on.

Protect the quiet zone

Leave a clear margin around the code — roughly the width of one of its modules. Crowding it with text or art is the most common reason a code fails.

Watch contrast and finish

  • Dark code on a light background scans most reliably.
  • Glossy or metallic stock can throw glare — test under real light.
  • Avoid placing codes over folds, seams or curved surfaces.

Link to something worth the tap

On a card, a single QR to your full TreeLink beats five icons. On packaging, link to setup videos, a reorder page or registration.

Always go dynamic

Packaging outlives campaigns. A dynamic QR code lets you repoint the destination long after the boxes ship — and shows you scan counts.

Print once, test twice. Then never reprint — just edit the link.
